Southwest Colorado Local Animal Control

Chipmunk Facts!

Two species of chipmunks can be found in Southwest Colorado. One is the thirteen-lined ground squirrel, named for the thirteen stripes that run the length of the animals body.

The other is the least chipmunk, which is the smallest member of the chipmunk family. Colors vary from yellow-gray to gray-brown with dark, tawny stripes that extend to the base of the tail.

Thirteen-lined ground squirrels prefer dry grassy areas that are low-cut. They will dig their burrows in the ground. These nests are often concealed by vegetation and rarely have soil scattered out front. Thirteen-liners hibernate during fall and winter. This typically begins in later September or early October and ends between late March and early May.

Chipmunk burrows are often well hidden near stumps, wood piles, or the base of a house or garage. No obvious mounds of soil can be found around the entrance. Chipmunks carry soil away from their dens to make the entrance less noticeable. These critters enter a state of torpor, becoming relatively inactive from late fall through winter.

Chipmunk Removal in Colorado

Chipmunks are often confused with squirrels when it comes to the damage they can inflict on your property. It is important to know the difference when working on control and removal of these animals.

When chipmunks are present in large numbers, they can cause structural damage by burrowing under your home or patio. Burrows can also damage pool liners or weaken retaining walls, causing collapse.

Chipmunks may wreak havoc on your garden or landscaping as well. They are notorious for digging up newly planted seeds and clipping the shoots of emerging plants.

There are many products on the market that claim to keep rodents away and may be labeled as, “chipmunk repellent.”

The problem with these “repellents” is that a chipmunk will grow accustomed to the product and continue once again with its daily activities.

If you have any questions or need immediate assistance with a chipmunk issue, do not hesitate to reach out to San Juan Wildlife. As with all of our services, we will make sure to remove and relocate these cute rodents in a safe and humane manner.
