Skunks Facts
Scientific name: Mephitis mephitis
Skunks are members of the weasel family. There are four species in North America. The two most common to our region are striped and spotted skunks.
The normal home range for a skunk is 1/2 to 2 miles in diameter. This may increase for males during the breeding season. They can travel up to 4 or 5 miles in a night.
Skunks typically inhabit meadows, pastures, and other open lands bordering forests. They prefer to den in hollow logs or abandoned burrows. Sometimes, however, they chose rather inconvenient homes – under your deck or porch, perhaps even in the crawl space under your home.
You will likely know if a skunk has taken up residence on your property. The odor these critters give off is unmistakable and quite intolerable.
Skunks are not normally aggressive and will not defend themselves unless cornered or harmed. They usually provide a warning by stomping their feet before discharging their scent. If you come across a skunk, use this time to retreat slowly so as not to be sprayed. Loud noises and quick, aggressive actions should be avoided.
Overly aggressive skunks that approach without hesitation and display abnormal behavior should be reported to local wildlife removal authorities immediately – they could be infected with rabies.
Skunks are a primary carrier of rabies. Their spray is not known to contain the virus, but you still want to avoid confrontation of any sort.
